Doctor to Entrepreneur:
A learner's flashback musings

September 16, 2017

Doctor. That's one of the most common answers if you ask a child what they want to be. And so it was with me. When I was five years old and was asked what I wanted to be, I confidently answered that I would be a doctor. My reasoning was to provide free treatment to people in need. Why is that? Indeed, at that time it was difficult for me, my family and the people in my neighborhood to go to the doctor because of the expensive medical fees. In addition, I was also encouraged to continue the field that my late father had worked in, becoming a servant in the health sector and of course my family supported me.

Departing from the will, I am sure and meant it to do what I can do to achieve it. From someone who went to school in a small village on the outskirts of the city, and I continued to strive to be the top of my class from elementary school to junior high school. This allowed me to become a student at one of the best high schools in my city. At that point, I felt that I had found the right place for me.  In place of such insight and knowledge I am growing. My will to become a doctor strengthened. Faculty of Medicine at University of Indonesia (FKUI) become my target to realize my dreams. A choice that becomes its own challenges because it is difficult to be achieved.

Me during the practical test at the competition

Even though I went to one of the best high schools in my school, getting to FKUI was a challenge because there had never been an alumnus from my school who had gotten in. Therefore, I tried to study to prepare for the SBMPTN since grade 10 to keep trying to get accepted there. I really enjoyed studying exact sciences, physics and biology. From there I was introduced to experiments and participated in various science olympiad competitions. One of it was National Medical and General Biology Competition (NMGBC) - is an annual and flagship event of the Asian Medical Student's Association University of Indonesia. I joined it when I was in the first semester of grade 11. It was so exciting and gave me more spirit because I feel like my learning efforts were not in vain when I become one of the top finalist and got a golden ticket from them.

On the other hand, my mindset was also developed during the journey. I continue to ask myself. What is the purpose of my life? What I actually want? From there, I realized that my goals were happy. It is very simple. I am happy when I can help my family, friends, the people I loved and my surroundings. Beneficial to the environment is the real thing I want to do. I realize that helping others not just become a doctor or any job, but also be a rights and obligations of any person.

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime

After I elaborated more on myself, I realized the and found the answer I found the answer. "Entrepreneur" became an answer in the last year of my high school period. School of Business and Management ITB into a place I forge myself in this young adult phase. I need to learn and explore a lot of things at this school for the next 3 year.

For FKUI, thank you for being one of life's goals, for accompanying me in the first two years of high school, for making me learn a lot, reading books on medicine, biology, and even studying hard from grade 10  because I realized that you are really hard to come by. It's a reminder when you're about to give up. You have made me overcome my laziness to study instead of enduring the loss.

Finally I know we can't be together. For my younger self, please stay calm, we still have the same goals, but different ways. We are in the same book, just different pages.
